Approximately fifty vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Automobiles, exterior walls and mailboxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Officers say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish liquid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Law enforcement then located multiple other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are banned in Germany under regulations outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials say preliminary tests suggest the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives stated they were trying "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior official commented the incident rendered him stunned and had to be addressed promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine people by a gunman focusing on individuals of foreign heritage in five years prior.
