The anticipation around the recent awards show has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by intricate stories, player agency, and flexible progression—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is familiar fare, what makes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities you can achieve by choosing a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Most missions can be solved in multiple ways, often in lateral fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.
The Journey Continues
It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, fans can look forward to a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
